What I'm Reading...

There's not a lot of books that I will just rush out to pick up simply because someone suggested it. But, this one was. And, thanks to technology, I didn't have to rush anywhere. I simply downloaded it to my Ipad. I'm loving this technology age. Do I think the paperback books are dying off? I hope not. There will always be something special to holding a book in your hand and smelling the pages. But that's not my review of this book. This was a powerful book that I think everyone should read. It's all about two main characters, a white man named Ron and a black man named Denver. Their stories are told in 1st person narrative by themselves, rotating each chapter. It's amazing to see their stories which are so opposite from one another come together. It's a beautiful and very moving story. I strongly recommend it. It makes you think about what you are prioritizing.

For some reason, I have all of Donald Miller's books. I'm not big on his beliefs. In fact, I think he's a bit off in some areas, but this book of his is all about his story. He's been asked by some great movie producers if they can make a movie about his life. The funny thing is, once they've spent some quality time with him, they don't think they have much of a story. It's another great book that makes you think about where you are finding joy and what your life looks like to others. I'm not finished with it, but I'm greatly enjoying it simply because I think Miller is a great writer. He's funny, entertaining, though provoking, and culturally aware.

We are wrapping up a series at church right now on addictions. This book was written by John Owen over 400 years ago, and yet the concepts behind one wrestling with sin are as if he's aware of the current sins that surround so many people today. I had lunch with a friend a few weeks ago who has had a struggle with a certain addiction. He recommended this book to help me better understand what he's been going through and how to better be able to relate to people who have these struggles. This is an amazing book, and it's simply shocking to be reminded that there's really no sin that's new under the sun. Sin is sin and it doesn't change much. We should really learn from our mistakes or others and be educated on sin so as to avoid it all the more. It's a great read if you can look past the old english. I think it's actually out of print, but you can download the kindle version for about $2.00 on Amazon!

So that's what I'm reading right now. Some people have asked me in the past how I find time to read. Simple, turn off the TV in the evenings. We don't really watch much TV anymore. With a couple kids and living in a barn, it's actually pretty difficult to watch tv without the fear of waking one of them. So, Susanna and I are reading more and more. It's been a blessing.

Blessings,
Frankie
